The Quality of Scented Candles

Scented candles are made with fragrant oils mixed into the wax, giving off a pleasant aroma while burning. There are many ways to make a scented candle. If a candle is poorly made, the wax will smell nice when you sniff it but lighting the candle might not produce any aroma at all. This is a frustrating waste of money, but a few tips can help you to identify quality candles from the poor ones.

Many scented candles are made with pre-blended wax which has its own saturation point for fragrance oils. Adding more oil than the wax can absorb will result in the candle sweating out the oil. This limitation is between ˝ and 1 oz. of oil per pound of pre-blended wax. A better grade of scented candle is called a “triple scent” and uses a different blend of wax that can hold 1 ˝ oz. of fragrance per pound—three times the old standard. These quality candles will produce a pleasant aroma when burned.

Some candle makers might use a proprietary blend of wax that can hold even more fragrance oil, producing super-scented candles. Some even claim to use more than 2 oz of fragrance per pound of wax.

Scented candles come in many varieties, such as tea lights, votives, or jar candles. Aromatherapy scents can create a relaxing mood and enhance well-being. Food-scented candles such as apple-pie and cinnamon spice can create a lovely imitation-baking smell in the kitchen. A scented candle in any room is a treat. A well-made scented candle will melt to oil and burn as liquid without releasing smoke.

You should have no trouble finding quality scented candles online or in many department stores and specialty shops. You will probably end up paying more for the high-end candles, but they will smell better and your home, family, and guests will thank you!
